New CD - first reviews
Karl Nyhlin’s new solo CD is out since a couple of weeks, and the first reviews have appeared, all (so far) in Swedish newspapers.
Smålandsposten gives it 5 stars and writes ”Karl Nyhlin masters this art to perfection. Technique, feeling and insight come together in his playing.
A review in Eskilstunakuriren and Katrineholmskuriren also gives 5 stars and calls it ”without a doubt one of this year’s knockouts in its genre. Tasteful, noble, and very elegant. An exquisite gem for your CD collection.”
Svenska Dagbladet praises the freshness of the interpretations and gives it a five out of six. Sydsvenskan writes: ”Nyhlin’s approach is perfect for this repertoire. The music glides forward with subtle elegance, graceful and refined.”
"The Jacobean Lutenists", available now in record stores, or internet shops such as this one.
Site up and running again!
After a few weeks of webhost-related troubles, this site has moved to a new, hopefully more reliable hosting company.

New solo CD soon to be released
Karl Nyhlin's second solo CD, "The Jacobean Lutenists", will be released internationally on 20 February by dB Productions.
Karl is currently working towards the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut solo CD released in March 2010. The forthcoming CD will consist of Jacobean lute music.
Karl's activities within the next few weeks: CD recordings with Rebaroque (music by Telemann on the Proprius label) and Villancico (Ecuador Baroque on the CPO label), Monteverdi Poppea at the Oslo Opera, and various solo and orchestral concerts. The calendar will be updated shortly.
Release concert time change
Please note that the time of the release concert on 13 March has changed from 20.00 to 18.30.
New sound file
A piece by Holborne has been added to the 'listen' section.
Music by The Knife
Karl Nyhlin and Maria Lindal have been invited to perform on Swedish national radio talk show "Nordegren i P1", on 4 Feb, following an acclaimed performance at the Expressen Culture Award ceremony last Monday. They perform a song by electronica pop act The Knife, in their own interpretation for violin and theorbo. The Knife recieved the Expressen Music Prize this year - last year's winner was Maria Lindal.
Website down
This website has been down for about two days, due to a problem with the web hosting company. Problem seems solved, and hopefully it won't happen again!
Solo CD out in March
Karl's solo CD of music by Kellner and Weiss for 11-course lute is scheduled for release on 8 March 2010 on dB Productions, to be distributed worldwide through Naxos Sweden.
The "Listen" section has been updated.
The Earthly Garden of Delights
I have been working for a couple of weeks with soprano Susanne Rydén and recorder player Anna Petrini exploring 15th century Flemish music in preparation for our performance "The Earthly Garden Of Delights", which will also include new music by Kim Hedås. The project is sponsored by The Swedish Arts Grants Committee and Framtidens Kultur and will premiere in February 2009.
Fantastic music! /Karl
Currently working at the Drottningholm Theatre playing Monteverdi. This autumn I will be travelling around Europe as usual, and also working towards my debut solo CD. /Karl
Apologies to those who have been curious about my goings-on and whereabouts - the calendar section has not been updated for a long time. A few upcoming events have now been added, and we will try to keep you posted more frequently.
Other activities in the near future include two CD recordings with the Stockholm Baroque Orchestra in January and February. I will also record some new solo pieces which should be ready and posted on the "Listen" section shortly.
Best wishes for the new year!
Teaching 2
I will also be guest teaching at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, NL, this spring.
I will be teaching lute at the new Early Music Department at the Kulturama School of Performing Arts, Stockholm. For info about applications for the next academic year (2007/2008), or other questions, please contact me or Kulturama. /Karl
Grant money
I have recieved two grants (from The Swedish Arts Grants Committee and H Ax:son Johnson's Foundation) which will enable me to spend more time, within the next half year or so, on preparing and practising solo music. I will however also be performing chamber and orchestral music during this time - the calendar will be updated shortly. /Karl
Two new CD releases
New Dutch Academy's new CD with music by Joseph Schmitt was released on Pentatone during our recent Australia tour. More details coming up soon on the NDA website.

"Dancing Bach", Stockholm Baroque Orchestra's new CD with instrumental music by Bach performed with a touch of folk music influences, will be released on Proprius on Friday 19 May. A release party with live performances and dancing will take place at Konstnärshuset, Stockholm (see calendar for details).
New mp3
A new solo piece has been added to the "listen" section. Let me know if you have any trouble downloading, or listening to the files. /Karl
"Christina's Journey" on TV
The performance Christina's Journey, featuring soprano Susanne Rydén and the Stockholm Baroque Ensemble, will be shown on Swedish national television on the following dates:

1 January 19.00 (SVT 2)
2 January 23.00 (SVT 2)
3 January 14:15 (SVT Europa)
6 January 17.00 (SVT 2)
NDA on web radio
The New Dutch Academy 2005 Festival in The Hague 16-19 February was recorded by Dutch radio. Excerpts from the concerts are available to listen to online here, for a limited period (a week from today I think). Click on "uitzending gemist?", then select "woensdagmiddagconcert".
Apart from my baroque guitar and theorbo continuo playing you will hear various members of the NDA Chamber Soloists with Anna Nyhlin, soprano, in a programme of French baroque music. /Karl
"Listen" update
Since I never seem to find the time to record more solo pieces, in the "listen" section I have now put up some pieces recorded at a live performance in Holland last week. They are completely unedited, so they contain playing mistakes as well as audience noice (particularly in the first piece). I will probably only keep them on this site for a limited time, until I have made a new, "proper" recording, which hopefully will be soon. So listen while it lasts!
New mp3
A Dowland piece, recorded three and a half years ago, has been added to the 'listen' section. Some new recordings will follow shortly!
CD release and tour première
The project ”Christina’s Journey”, with soprano Susanne Rydén and the Stockholm Baroque Ensemble, had its world première in London in May, and its first performance in Sweden (Uppsala Castle) on the 6th of June. The Super Audio CD ”Christina’s Journey" has just been released on the Caprice label. Both the concert in London and the one in Sweden recieved rave reviews from the press. Several concert tours will follow during 2004 and 2005. See www.queenchristina.com for more info.
